Breuss Cancer Cure

What is the Breuss Cancer Cure

The Breuss Cancer Cure is an alternative treatment method developed by the Austrian naturopath Rudolf Breuss. The cure primarily consists of a 42-day fast, where you exclusively consume special vegetable juices and herbal teas.

The Foundation of the Cure

Breuss’ theory was that cancer cells feed on solid food, and that by fasting, you can “starve” the cancer cells. At the same time, he believed that the special juices and teas could strengthen the immune system and help the body fight the disease.

Healing vegetable juices and herbal teas

He believed that specific vegetables and herbs had a special ability to strengthen the immune system and fight disease.

Cleansing the body

Breuss also believed that the cure would help cleanse the body of toxins and waste products, which would create a better environment for the body to heal itself more easily.

How the cure works in practice

42-day fast

This is the central part of the cure. During this period, you may only consume the special vegetable juices and herbal teas.

Composition of juices and teas

The vegetables and herbs used are carefully selected according to Breuss’ recipes. Some of the most common vegetables are carrots, celery, and beets (which, by the way, appear in many different forms of health diets).

Complementary treatments

It is recommended that practitioners of the cure combine it with other alternative treatment forms such as herbal medicine/supplements, massage, and/or breathing exercises.

Criticism

The Breuss Cancer Cure is strongly criticized by the conventional medical world. Here are some of the most important points of criticism:

Lack of evidence

There are no well-controlled studies showing that the cure has any effect on cancer.

Risk of complications

The fasting can lead to severe malnutrition, weakened immune system, heart problems, and even death.

Individual variations

Cancer is a complex disease with many different types of cancer. A uniform cure therefore cannot be expected to work for all patients.

Benefits of the Breuss Cancer Cure

Cleansing the body

The cure aims to cleanse the body of toxins and waste products. This can also give a sense of well-being in some people.

Strengthening the immune system

The cure is believed to strengthen the immune system.

Mental surplus

A period of clarity and focus on health can give a mental surplus in some people.

Risks and disadvantages

Malnutrition

A strict fast like this can lead to severe deficiency of certain nutrients, which can weaken the body and make it more susceptible to diseases.

Weakened immune system

Instead of strengthening the immune system, a longer period of malnutrition can actually weaken it.

Delay of effective treatment

Some patients who follow the cure may delay or completely abandon conventional cancer treatment, which can be unfortunate.

Psychological problems

A diet this restrictive can lead to psychological problems such as depression and anxiety. (But as described above, it can also lead to a feeling of strength.)

Important warnings

Stop for præparater ved lave blodplader i alle protokoller symboliseret ved en skærm med advarselstrekant, stetoskop, stopskilt ind over bøtter med kosttilskud.

Since the Breuss cure is a prolonged fast (starvation), there are situations where it can be directly life-threatening:

Weight loss and cachexia:

Many cancer patients suffer from cachexia (severe, disease-related weight loss and muscle loss).

Risk:

  • If you are already underweight or have lost a lot of weight, a 42-day fast is dangerous. The body will begin to break down heart and respiratory muscles to get energy, which can lead to heart failure.
  • The cure is only suitable for people who are in good nutritional condition.

In connection with surgery

The body needs large amounts of protein to heal wounds and tissue after surgery.

Risk:

  • The Breuss cure contains almost no protein. If you fast immediately after surgery, the wounds may have difficulty healing, and you risk the stitches coming undone or infection setting in more easily.
  • Therefore, always wait until you are fully healed.

Diabetes

Even though it is vegetable juice, beet and carrot juice contain a lot of natural sugar.

Risk:

  • Without fiber to slow down absorption, the sugar goes straight into the blood. For diabetics, this can create dangerous fluctuations in blood sugar (especially if you take insulin but do not eat solid food).

The chemo conflict (Valter Longo vs. Breuss)

Newer research (e.g., Valter Longo) shows that short-term fasting (2-3 days) around chemo can be beneficial.

Warning:

  • This must not be confused with the Breuss cure’s 42 days. Fasting for 6 weeks while receiving chemo will break down the body violently, as it lacks the building blocks to rebuild the cells that chemo kills.
  • It is strongly advised against combining the full Breuss cure with a hard chemo course.

Safety

Always consult your practitioner before starting a protocol.

Conclusion

The Breuss Cancer Cure is not a recognized treatment for cancer. It is important to emphasize that it should never stand alone as cancer treatment. In addition, fasting for 1.5 months can greatly weaken the body.

What can you eat

Vegetable juices

The Breuss cure places great emphasis on specific vegetable juices, which Rudolf Breuss believed had special healing properties. The most common vegetables included in the cure are:

Carrots: Rich in beta-carotene, which is an antioxidant.

Celery: Known for its high water and mineral content.

Beets: Contains betanin, which has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Other vegetables that can be included:

Although carrots, celery, and beets are the most important and common, other vegetables can also be included to a lesser extent. These can include:

Cucumber: Provides fluid and contains antioxidants.

Spinach: Rich in iron and other nutrients.

Herbal teas

The teas were supposed to help cleanse the body and support digestion.

It is important to emphasize that during the Breuss cure, you do not consume solid food.

Typical herbs in the Breuss cure:

Dandelion: Often used for its ability to stimulate the liver and support digestion.

Nettle: Attributed a cleansing effect and can support kidney function.

Birch leaves: Can help cleanse the kidneys and support urinary function.

Dandelion: Can have a mild laxative effect and support the liver.

Other herbs that can be included:

Chamomile: Known for its calming properties.

Peppermint: Can help with digestion and relieve stomach problems.

Anise: Can have a calming effect on the digestive system.

Example menu (very simplified)

Morning: A glass of freshly pressed carrot and celery juice

Lunch: A glass of freshly pressed beet juice

Evening: A cup of herbal tea

Note

Fasting should never replace relevant cancer treatment. It should always be seen as a supplement.

Which type of fasting is best in any given case depends on the individual. Therefore, you should consult your practitioner.
