Bill Henderson protocol

Summary of the Bill Henderson protocol

Purpose of the protocol:

  • To rebuild the immune system so the body can fight cancer itself. The approach is designed to be affordable, simple, and possible to do at home without medical help.

Content of the protocol:

  • A combination of a specific diet (Budwig mixture), exclusion of “toxins” (sugar, gluten, alcohol), and a fixed range of carefully selected supplements (primarily Beta-glucan and “heart-strengthening” vitamins).

The central idea:

  • Cancer is not a local disease (a lump), but a sign of a systemic collapse in the body’s defenses. By oxygenating the cells and boosting immune cells (macrophages), you remove the cause of cancer.

Who was Bill Henderson

Bill Henderson (1932–2016) was an American author and former colonel who became one of the world’s most influential “cancer coaches.” His mission began in grief when he lost his wife, Marjorie, to cancer in 1994 after a grueling course of conventional treatment. He was convinced that she died from the treatment, not the disease.

Unlike many other theorists, Henderson was a practitioner. He spent 20 years advising thousands of patients by phone. He listened to what worked in reality and filtered out anything that was too expensive or too complicated.

The result was the book Cancer-Free, which serves as a manual for many of those who want to take responsibility themselves. [1]

His legacy is a protocol that combines the best from two Nobel Prize-nominated researchers (Budwig and Pauling/Rath) into one comprehensive plan.

The protocol’s two pillars

Henderson didn’t invent the biology, but he combined two very different scientific theories into one “weapon system.”

To follow the protocol, you must understand these two mechanisms:

1. Johanna Budwig’s Principle

Cell oxygenation and membrane tension

  • This is the engine of the protocol. Henderson insisted that all cancer forms share one weakness: They are anaerobic (thrive without oxygen).

The mechanism:

  • The cells in our body must be able to absorb oxygen to function. This is controlled by electrical tensions in the cell membrane.

Johanna Budwig discovered that unsaturated fatty acids (from flaxseed oil) are electron-rich, but they can only be absorbed by the cell if they become water-soluble. This only happens when they chemically bind to sulfur-containing proteins (found in cottage cheese/quark).

When you eat this mixture (the Budwig mixture), you restore the cells’ magnetic field and dampen the inflammation that drives cancer [5].

This forces oxygen into the cells. Since cancer cells cannot survive in a high-oxygen environment (Warburg effect), they will either die or begin to behave like normal cells again. That’s why it’s not enough to just take oil capsules. The chemical reaction in the blender is crucial.

2. Dr. Matthias Rath’s Principle

Encapsulation of the tumor

  • This is the protocol’s “brake.” The theory is based on research from Dr. Rath and Linus Pauling about connective tissue.

The mechanism:

  • Cancer cells spread by secreting enzymes that act like “biological scissors.” These scissors cut holes in the surrounding connective tissue (collagen), allowing the cancer to move further into the bloodstream and form metastases.

Henderson uses a specific combination of L-Lysine, L-Proline, and vitamin C. These substances are the building blocks for collagen.

By flooding the body with these substances, you make the connective tissue so strong that the cancer’s “scissors” become dull. The tumor is simply walled in a strong collagen fortress, which stops the spread and buys time for the immune system to kill it. [4]

The most important components

Henderson’s protocol is known for being extremely specific. He warned against improvising, as the quality of the ingredients is crucial for the effect. Here are the “tools” the protocol requires:

Beta-1,3D Glucan (the heavy artillery)

According to Henderson, this is the most important standalone component. It is a molecule extracted from the cell walls of yeast cells. When taken on an empty stomach, it tricks the body into thinking there is a fungal infection. This activates billions of macrophages (white blood cells), which are put on high alert – “priming.” [3]

They become aggressive and begin systematically to seek out and devour foreign cells, including cancer cells. Henderson emphasized that cheap supermarket varieties are worthless; the purity must be extremely high to work.

FOCC (flax oil) and cottage cheese)

The daily medicine. You should blend cold-pressed flax oil with cottage cheese until the oil is completely gone and the mass is white and airy.

Green tea extract

Should be taken as a supplement, not just drunk. The active substance EGCG directly inhibits cancer cell metabolism and works synergistically with Lysine/Vitamin C to stop the spread. [6]

Heart plus

Henderson’s name for the mixture of vitamin C, Lysine, and Proline. It allegedly strengthens connective tissue and arteries.

Root canal treatments (the toxic focus)

  • This is often the hardest part for people. Henderson (and many biological/holistic dentists) believes that a root canal-treated tooth is a “dead” tooth that functions as a factory for anaerobic bacteria.
  • These bacteria produce extremely potent toxins that paralyze the immune system. Henderson did not believe you could get well if you had “toxin factories” sitting in your jaw, and consistently recommended the removal of root canal-treated teeth as part of the healing. [7]

Critical Warning

Although tooth extraction is a cornerstone of Henderson’s theory, there is a life-threatening exception for patients receiving conventional treatment. You must never have a tooth extracted without your oncologist’s approval in the following cases:

If you are taking bone-strengthening medication:

  • Patients who receive bisphosphonates (e.g., Zometa, Xgeva, or Pamidronate) for bone metastases must not undergo surgical procedures in the jaw.
  • This can trigger osteonecrosis – a condition where the bone tissue in the jaw dies and cannot heal again. It is a serious, painful, and chronic injury.

If you have a low immune system:

  • During chemotherapy, white blood cells (leukocytes) are often at their lowest. Pulling out a tooth creates an open wound with direct access to the bloodstream.
  • Without an immune system to fight the bacteria in the mouth, this can lead to life-threatening blood poisoning (sepsis).

Challenges

Bill Hendersons Protokol symboliseret ved tegning af en gammeldags vægt med vægtskåle på lilla baggrund.

Bill Henderson’s protocol is a “do-it-yourself” solution, which is both its strength and weakness.

No medical monitoring:

  • Since it is a book-based cure, the patient is left to themselves. There is not immediately a practitioner to adjust doses if the numbers do not improve.

Lack of clinical studies:

  • The protocol is based on anecdotes and theories from others (Budwig/Rath), but the combined “Henderson package” has never been tested in scientific trials.

Simplification:

  • Critics point out that the protocol can make desperate patients believe they can cure aggressive cancer alone with cottage cheese and vitamin pills, which can lead to dangerous delays in necessary medical treatment. (However, I would argue that the reality is often the opposite – that desperate patients, who have been given up on by doctors, are trying to find other ways to extend their lives and quality of life.)

Qualitative studies:

  • However, there are qualitative studies that show that many patients experience positive effects and not least feel empowered by taking responsibility for their own healing [2].

Although tooth extraction is a cornerstone of Henderson’s theory, there is a life-threatening exception for patients receiving conventional treatment. You must never have a tooth extracted without your oncologist’s approval in the following cases:

Low blood platelets or blood-thinning medication

The problem:

  • The heart of the cure is the large amounts of flaxseed oil (often 6 tablespoons daily in the Budwig mixture). Omega-3 fatty acids in these doses act as strong blood thinners.

Risk:

  • If you already have low blood platelets (thrombocytopenia) due to chemo or disease, or if you are taking blood-thinning medication (such as Marcoumar or Heart Magnyl), you significantly increase the risk of internal bleeding.

Advice:

  • Get your blood platelets checked. If they are low, the amount of oil must be drastically reduced (e.g., to 1 tbsp.), or completely omitted, until the numbers are normal.

During active chemotherapy

The problem:

  • The protocol prescribes strong antioxidants such as Green Tea Extract, vitamin C, and Barley Grass.

Risk:

  • Many oncologists advise against high-dose antioxidants on the actual chemo days and the days around, as they theoretically can “protect” cancer cells from the chemo’s attack (which often works by oxidation).

Advice:

  • If you are undergoing chemotherapy, you should pause the supplements (especially Green Tea and vitamin C) 2 days before, during, and 2 days after chemo. Only use the “food part” (Budwig cream) on those days, if you can tolerate it.

In case of severe wasting or swallowing difficulty

The problem:

  • Henderson recommends a strict “Raw Food” diet with lots of raw vegetables and no “empty calories.”

Risk:

  • If you suffer from cachexia (severe weight loss) or have sores in your mouth/esophagus after radiation/chemo, raw vegetables are a bad idea. They require a lot of energy to digest, provide too few calories per bite, and the coarse texture hurts to swallow.

Advice:

  • At this stage, it’s about survival and calories. Forget the “Raw Food” requirement. Eat soft, calorie-dense food (soups, purees, the soft Budwig cream) until you have regained your strength and weight. Your body cannot heal itself if it is starving.

Conclusion

Bill Henderson’s protocol is one of the most popular “beginner protocols” in the alternative environment because it is manageable, affordable, and logically structured.

It appeals to those who want to take control themselves and who believe that the body lacks nourishment (oxygen and immune substances) rather than chemistry.

The method is particularly relevant for patients who want to make an active effort alongside monitoring (“Watchful Waiting”), as a supplement to conventional treatment (though one should be aware of antioxidants during chemo), or where treatments no longer work or are possible.

A typical day on the protocol

Bill Hendersons Protokol symboliseret ved en skål med hytteost, nogle kapsler, asparges og et vækkeur.

Following Henderson requires fixed routines, especially around meals.

Morning:

  • The day starts with a glass of water with barley grass powder to neutralize acid. After this, the day’s most important pills are taken: Beta-glucan (on an empty stomach) for maximum absorption.

Late morning (Budwig time):

  • The day’s main meal is “The FOCC” (Flax Oil Cottage Cheese). You blend flax oil and cottage cheese into a completely smooth cream. This is mixed with fresh fruit, nuts, and freshly ground flaxseeds. This should be eaten immediately, as the oil quickly goes rancid.

Afternoon:

  • The rest of the day’s diet consists of large amounts of vegetables (raw or lightly steamed), a little fish or chicken, but absolutely no sugar, white bread, or dairy products (except for the cottage cheese).
  • You take your “Heart Plus” tablets (vitamin C/Lysine) and green tea extract distributed throughout the day.

Evening:

  • Dinner is light and healthy. No alcohol.
  • Before bedtime, make sure you have taken all your supplements, and end the day with a focus on stress reduction, as Henderson believed that emotional stress blocks healing.
