Budwig Cure for Cancer
What is the Budwig Cure
The Budwig Cure (or protocol) is an alternative cancer treatment method developed by the German doctor Johanna Budwig in the 1950s.
The cure is based on consuming a mixture of cottage cheese and cold-pressed flaxseed oil, with added fruit and vegetables.
The precise mechanism of action behind the Budwig Cure is unclear and disputed. Budwig believed that the mixture of cottage cheese and flaxseed oil strengthens the immune system and improves the cells’ oxygen uptake, which should optimize the fight against cancer cells.
In addition, the cure emphasizes a diet rich in raw food, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids, while processed foods, sugar, white flour, dairy products, pork, processed meat, shellfish, coffee, etc. are discouraged.
Basic Principles of the Budwig Cure
Flaxseed oil
Considered crucial for the cure. It is believed that flaxseed oil has a unique ability to stabilize cell membranes and improve oxygen uptake in the cells.
Fresh cheese
Should be completely fresh and preferably organic. The cheese is believed to be an important source of sulfur, which, together with the flaxseed oil, is supposed to create a special compound that can fight cancer cells.
Other foods
The cure also includes other foods such as raw vegetables, fruit, and grains.
Elimination of certain foods
As mentioned above, the cure suggests avoiding refined sugar, animal fat, and industrially produced foods (highly processed).
The Chemistry Behind the Mixture

Dr. Budwig’s great discovery was not just flaxseed oil, but how to get the oil into the cells.
The problem
Oil is fat-soluble and can have difficulty penetrating the cell membrane and into the cell’s “powerhouse.”
The solution
Cottage cheese (quark) is rich in sulfur-containing proteins. When these proteins bind to the fatty acids in the flaxseed oil, a chemical reaction occurs:
- The oil becomes water-soluble. This means that it can suddenly be transported with the blood all the way into the smallest capillaries and into the cells, where it should restart oxygen uptake.
The requirement
This happens only if the oil and cheese are whipped together so thoroughly that they cannot be separated again.
Effect
The Budwig Cure is believed to be able to prevent and treat cancer by strengthening the immune system and improving the health of the cells.
Other diseases
The cure has also been promoted as a treatment for cardiovascular diseases, autoimmune diseases, and other chronic conditions.
Benefits
- Rich in nutrients from cottage cheese, flaxseed oil, fruit, and vegetables
- Can have a positive effect on general well-being and digestion
- Some people experience an improvement in cancer symptoms after following the cure
Disadvantages
- Lacks scientific documentation for effect on cancer (But maybe that’s not so crucial if it works)
- Can be time-consuming and cumbersome to follow
- Can lead to nutritional deficiencies if not followed correctly
- Can interact with conventional cancer treatment
Guidance on the Budwig Cure
You should consult a qualified practitioner before starting the Budwig Cure, especially if you are undergoing conventional cancer treatment. The doctor can (if they have the necessary knowledge of the Budwig Protocol) assess whether the cure is safe and suitable for you, and can help you adapt it to your individual needs.
In addition, there are various online resources and support groups for people who follow the Budwig Cure. Here you can find information, experiences from other users, and support to follow the cure.
Basic Principles

How to make the “Muesli”
You cannot mix it by hand. You must use an immersion blender.
Recipe (therapeutic dose)
- 3 tbsp. cold-pressed flaxseed oil.
- 6 tbsp. cottage cheese (or skyr/quark – should be low-fat/high protein).
- 2 tbsp. milk (to make it easier to blend).
Procedure
Put the ingredients in a bowl and blend with an immersion blender for 1-2 minutes.
- The mixture should be completely white and creamy like whipped cream. There must not be visible “oil eyes.” If the oil floats on top, it will not work.
- After that, you can add berries, nuts, or a little honey for taste.
Dosage
Cancer patients are typically recommended to eat this portion twice daily.
Storage of oil
Flaxseed oil is extremely sensitive. It cannot tolerate light and heat.
- Only buy oil in dark bottles that are kept refrigerated in the store.
- Always store it in the refrigerator at home.
- If it tastes bitter or scratches your throat, it has gone rancid and must be thrown out (it then forms free radicals instead of fighting them).
Other diet
- Follow a diet rich in raw food, whole grains, and omega-3 fatty acids. Eat plenty of fruit, vegetables, whole grain products, nuts, and seeds. Choose lean protein sources such as fish, chicken, and beans.
- Avoid processed foods, sugar, and white flour. These foods can disrupt the body’s natural balance and prevent the cure from working effectively.
- Drink plenty of water. It is important to stay hydrated to support the body’s natural cleansing processes.
Remember
The Budwig Cure is not a substitute for conventional cancer treatment. It is important to continue with your treatment plan unless otherwise agreed.
Important for chemotherapy and low blood platelets

Many of the substances that fight cancer effectively (especially in this protocol) also act as blood thinners. If chemotherapy has lowered your blood platelets (thrombocytes) to a critical level, you should be extra careful.
What you should pause with low blood platelets
If your numbers are at the bottom, the following substances should be paused to avoid bleeding risk until the marrow has recovered:
- Fatty acids: Omega-3, fish oil, flaxseed oil (Strong blood thinner), cod liver oil, flaxseed oil (Budwig), and krill oil.
- Herbal extracts (high dose): Curcumin/turmeric, Ginger, garlic (in high doses/capsules), ginkgo biloba, and Ginseng. (Inhibits the ability of blood platelets to clump together).
- Enzymes: Proteolytic enzymes such as Bromelain, Papain, and Serrapeptase. (as these break down fibrin, which helps the blood to clot).
- Specific Antioxidants: Vitamin E, Resveratrol, Quercetin, and strong Green Tea extract (EGCG).
- Off-label medication: Aspirin, Magnyl or Hjertemagnyl (must be stopped immediately with low platelets, unless otherwise agreed with the doctor).
Diarrhea and digestion
Flaxseed oil in large amounts acts as a laxative.
Why:
- Many experience acute “loose stools” when they start. Possibly start with half the dose and increase over a week. If the diarrhea continues, you are not absorbing the nutrients, and you should stop or reduce the oil.
Weight loss
The cure excludes many calorie-dense foods (sugar, animal fat, processed food).
Why:
- Cancer patients must not lose weight unintentionally. If you are losing weight on this cure, you should eat significantly more of the allowed carbohydrates (buckwheat, potatoes, rice, fruit) or supplement with extra protein powder in your Budwig mixture.
The fat prohibition
The Budwig protocol is very strict: Flaxseed oil must be the only source of fat.
Why:
- The theory is that “wrong” fats (butter, frying oil, animal fat) block the absorption of the good flaxseed oil. This makes the cure socially difficult to follow.
Support for bone marrow
There are strategies that specifically support the formation of blood platelets without counteracting the treatment:
- Melatonin: Studies show that melatonin can protect the bone marrow from chemo damage (taken at bedtime).
- Papaya leaf extract: Known for potentially being able to increase the number of blood platelets.
- Chlorophyll: Green juices (spinach/kale) deliver vitamin K, which supports blood clotting.
- Shark liver oil (alkylglycerols): Can stimulate the formation of white blood cells and platelets (should not be taken on the actual chemo days).
Safety
Always consult your practitioner before starting a protocol.
