He became a legend in integrative medicine in the 1970s against his will. As a young reserve doctor, he was responsible for two patients who were dying from liver failure after eating poisonous mushrooms (death cap). He called the National Institutes of Health and was sent an experimental drug: <a href=\"https:\/\/jegharkraeft.dk\/en\/alpha-lipoic-acid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against all odds, the patients survived and completely regenerated their livers. It can reuse other antioxidants (C and E vitamins) in the body.<br>For cancer patients, this is crucial as the liver is often the first organ to fail \u2013 either due to metastases or chemo toxicity [6].<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Metabolic stress on cancer (ALA):<\/strong><br>While ALA protects healthy cells, it works the opposite on cancer cells.<br>It forces the cancer cell&#8217;s mitochondria to use oxygen (aerobic combustion), which stresses the cancer cell metabolically (a process similar to the <a href=\"https:\/\/jegharkraeft.dk\/metabolisk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Warburg effect<\/a>). Oral ALA is not absorbed well enough to achieve the cancer-killing effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dose:<\/strong> Typically given as a drip 2 times a week (300-600 mg).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. <a href=\"https:\/\/jegharkraeft.dk\/en\/low-dose-naltrexone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN)<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most important drug in the protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Dose:<\/strong> 3.0 mg to 4.5 mg taken at bedtime (between 9 PM and 3 AM).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Oral supplements (triple antioxidant therapy)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The home treatment supports the IV treatment:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jegharkraeft.dk\/en\/alpha-lipoic-acid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oral ALA<\/a><strong>:<\/strong> For maintenance on days without drip.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jegharkraeft.dk\/en\/selenium\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Selenium<\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Works in synergy with ALA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jegharkraeft.dk\/en\/milk-thistle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Silymarin (Milk Thistle)<\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Known liver herb.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/jegharkraeft.dk\/en\/vitamin-b\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">B-Complex<\/a><strong>:<\/strong> Especially B1 vitamin is necessary when taking high doses of ALA.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reason: ALA uses B1 vitamin as a &#8220;helper substance&#8221; to convert sugar into energy in the cells.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When taking high doses of ALA, this process is put into overdrive, which quickly depletes the body&#8217;s supply of B1. This includes medications such as <em>Morphine, Oxycontin, Tramadol, Kodimagnyl, Dolol, and Fentanyl patches<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Naltrexone blocks the opiate receptors in the brain. It will immediately cancel the effect of your pain medication and possibly give you withdrawal symptoms and breakthrough pain. You must be completely tapered off opiates for at least 7-10 days before you can start on LDN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ALA and diabetes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alpha-Lipoic Acid (ALA) is so effective at lowering blood sugar that it can surprise diabetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Risk:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you take insulin or other diabetes medication, ALA can enhance the effect, so you get insulin shock (too low blood sugar).
