Throughout the 19th century, it was primarily studied in connection with fever diseases and as a tool to study sugar metabolism, as it was discovered that it caused the kidneys to excrete sugar. Cancer cells often have an extremely high number of these transporters on their surface to be able to suck sugar from their surroundings.
